“Every phase of life is unique – and deserves the best support.”

Hormonal balance accompanies women through all phases of their lives – from the first period through menopause. Each of these life phases places specific demands on the body, metabolism, and nutrient balance. Diet, lifestyle, and targeted micronutrient intake play a key role in supporting well-being and promoting hormonal balance.

The female body is a mirror of inner balance—finely tuned, powerful, and yet sensitively changing. From the first cycle through the period of trying to conceive, pregnancy, and breastfeeding to the ripening of menopause, the hormonal interplay changes, and with it the needs of body, mind, and soul. Each phase brings new challenges, but also unique strengths—and invites us to stay mindfully connected with ourselves.

In these natural transitions, the essence of feminine energy unfolds: the constant interplay between letting go and new beginnings, between rest and movement, between strength and sensitivity. When nutrition, exercise, recovery, and mental balance are in harmony, the natural harmony arises in which health, vitality, and well-being can flourish.

A conscious lifestyle—rich in rest, mindfulness, and a balanced diet—forms the foundation for maintaining this balance. During times of hormonal change, the targeted use of micronutrients can gently support the body and promote inner stability. The female body reacts sensitively to changes—and deserves attention, care, and understanding at every stage of life.

Thus, every phase of life becomes far more than a physical change. It becomes a path of growth and arrival, a journey to oneself – sustained by inner strength, natural intuition, and the ability to continually find balance.

In the rhythm of life. In harmony with oneself.

The female cycle – explained simply

The female menstrual cycle is a natural, recurring process in a woman's body. On average, it lasts about 28 days, but it can also be shorter or longer – anything between 21 and 35 days is perfectly normal.

The menstrual cycle serves to prepare the body for a possible pregnancy. This finely tuned process is controlled by several hormones that work together harmoniously.

The control center: brain and hormones

Hormonal regulation begins in the brain. Two areas play a key role in this process:

  • The hypothalamus – it gives the starting signal with the hormone GnRH .
  • The pituitary gland (hypophysis ) reacts by releasing two regulatory hormones – FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).

These reach the ovaries via the bloodstream – there, estrogen and progesterone begin to perform their important tasks.

The follicular phase – preparation for ovulation

On the first day of menstruation, a new cycle begins. As the uterine lining, which built up during the previous cycle, is shed, FSH stimulates the growth of several small follicles in the ovaries. An egg cell matures in each of these follicles. One of these follicles becomes dominant and produces increased amounts of estrogen – a key female hormone.

Estrogen has many functions:

  • It promotes the build-up of the uterine lining to enable implantation.
  • It makes the cervical mucus thinner, allowing sperm to penetrate more easily.
  • It supports bone stability and muscle metabolism .
  • It contributes to clear skin , a good mood , and inner vitality .

Many women experience a feeling of lightness, energy and joy of life during this phase – estrogen is at its peak.

Ovulation – the fertile moment

When estrogen levels reach their peak, the pituitary gland releases a strong surge of luteinizing hormone (LH). This so-called LH surge triggers ovulation: the mature follicle ruptures, and the egg is released. It travels through the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized within 12 to 24 hours. Since sperm can survive in the body for up to five days, the days around ovulation are considered the fertile window .

Some women feel ovulation as a slight pulling sensation in the lower abdomen or notice a change in cervical mucus, which is particularly clear and stretchy during this time.

The luteal phase – progesterone takes over

After ovulation, the empty follicle transforms into the corpus luteum. This now produces progesterone – the second major female hormone, which has a balancing and calming effect.

Progesterone :

  • optimally prepares the uterine lining for possible implantation,
  • inhibits uterine contractions,
  • causes body temperature to rise slightly,
  • It has a calming and sleep-inducing effect.
  • and balances the stimulating estrogen, thereby creating emotional balance.

If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum regresses after about two weeks. As a result, progesterone and estrogen levels drop – the uterine lining is shed, and the next menstruation begins. With the drop in hormones, the cycle ends – and the body starts again.

Perimenopause and menopause – a new hormonal balance

With increasing age, usually from the age of 40, the interplay of these hormones changes. The ovaries respond less regularly to signals from the brain, and ovulation becomes less frequent. This transitional period is called perimenopause .

During this phase, hormone levels fluctuate greatly:

  • Estrogen levels can be very high or very low at times. Women often experience these fluctuations as alternating energy levels, mood swings, or hot flashes.
  • Progesterone levels drop significantly as more cycles occur without ovulation. The balance between the two hormones shifts, which can lead to restlessness, sleep problems, or water retention.

The brain tries to counteract this by producing more FSH to stimulate the ovaries. When no more eggs mature, menstruation ceases – this point is called menopause . It usually occurs around the age of 50. This is followed by postmenopause , in which estrogen and progesterone levels remain permanently low, while FSH and LH levels remain elevated.

During this phase of life, the body adjusts to a new hormonal balance. Many women experience renewed stability, inner peace, and strength after this period of transition – a natural new beginning.

Here is the typical course of the four key hormones (estrogen, progesterone, LH and FSH) over a 28-day cycle .

The colored areas mark the cycle phases:

  • Red: Menstruation
  • Green: Follicular phase
  • Yellow: Ovulation
  • Blue: Luteal phase

The diagram illustrates how hormone levels influence and control each other throughout the cycle.

Here are the changes in hormones between approximately 35 and 60 years of age :
  • Green: Reproductive phase – regular cycles, stable hormones
  • Gold: Perimenopause – strong fluctuations, especially in estrogen, sharply decreasing progesterone, increasing FSH
  • Blue: Postmenopause – estrogen and progesterone levels remain permanently low, FSH and LH levels remain high

The diagram beautifully illustrates how the hormonal balance shifts: from a finely tuned cycle system to a new, stable equilibrium after menopause.

Iron & Vitamin C – a powerful duo during pregnancy

Why iron is so important during pregnancy

Iron requirements increase by up to 100% during pregnancy, as the mother's blood volume increases and iron is needed for blood formation and the baby's development .

Iron is essential for oxygen supply , energy production , and healthy cell division .

Iron deficiency can lead to fatigue, poor concentration , paleness and in severe cases to anemia – which in turn can increase the risk of premature birth or low birth weight.

The role of vitamin C

Vitamin C significantly improves the absorption of non-heme-bound iron (plant-based iron) in the intestine.

It reduces trivalent iron (Fe³⁺) into the form (Fe²⁺) that the body can use.

In combination with iron, vitamin C ensures that more iron enters the bloodstream and can be incorporated into hemoglobin.

Special considerations during pregnancy

Many women develop an iron deficiency from the second trimester onwards because their body's own reserves are no longer sufficient.

Vitamin C should therefore always be taken together with iron – either through diet (e.g. lentils + bell peppers, oatmeal + orange juice) or specifically through supplements.

Regular monitoring of ferritin levels (iron stores) by a doctor is advisable.

Recommendation

Purogyn Mama already contains high-quality iron in an optimal dosage and combines it with vitamin C (Ester-C®) – for improved bioavailability and good tolerability.

In cases of proven iron deficiency, a supplementary iron-vitamin C combination may be useful – after consultation with a doctor – to specifically replenish stores.

Omega-3 during pregnancy and breastfeeding – support for mother and child

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the need for certain nutrients is increased.
Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) , play a particularly important role in this.

Why is DHA so important?

DHA contributes to the normal development of the brain and eyes of the fetus and breastfed infants.*
This positive effect occurs when an additional 200 mg of DHA is consumed daily on top of the recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids for adults (250 mg EPA + DHA).*

Over and beyond:

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function .*

DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision .*

EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function .*

What the research shows

In recent years, there has been intensive research into the importance of omega-3 fatty acids during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Numerous studies show that an adequate intake of DHA during pregnancy supports the development of the child's brain and visual function .

Good nutrition of the mother positively influences the DHA content of breast milk , thus also benefiting the breastfed child from an optimal supply.

Meta-analyses indicate that omega-3 fatty acids may also contribute to prolonging pregnancy and reducing the risk of premature birth .

These findings underscore the importance of a balanced intake of omega-3 fatty acids during these sensitive phases of life.

Recommendation

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, targeted supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids – especially DHA – can help to meet the increased need.
Since DHA is only produced to a limited extent from plant sources, regular intake via high-quality DHA supplements such as PUROGYN Omega 3 vegan is recommended.

A notice:
Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should seek medical advice regarding individual dosage.

*Approved health claims in accordance with EU Regulation (EC) No. 1924/2006 and (EU) No. 440/2011, provided the stated quantities are ingested.

Why magnesium is also particularly important during perimenopause and menopause

Magnesium is a key mineral that can contribute to greater balance, energy and stability during perimenopause and menopause.
It supports nerves, muscles, bones and energy metabolism – making it a valuable companion during this natural phase of life.

Scientific background

With the onset of menopause, hormone levels change, and with them, many metabolic processes. Magnesium plays a central role in this, as it is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body – including energy metabolism, nerve and muscle function, and the maintenance of normal bones. A drop in estrogen levels can affect mineral balance, often increasing the need for magnesium during this phase of life. Adequate intake therefore supports overall well-being and metabolism.

Nerve support and stress relief

  • Magnesium contributes to the normal function of the nervous system and to normal psychological function.
  • It supports the transmission of stimuli between nerves and muscles – especially important during times of hormonal changes.

Muscle relaxation and energy

  • Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and normal energy metabolism.
  • It helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and can contribute to a feeling of inner peace.

Bone health and vitamin D metabolism

  • Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
  • It is also an important partner of vitamin D and calcium in mineral metabolism.

cardiovascular and metabolic balance

  • Magnesium contributes to electrolyte balance and supports normal muscle function, including the heart muscle.
  • A balanced magnesium intake can help to keep energy and circulatory metabolism in balance.
